Puerto Azul Golf and Country Club

Asia / Philippines / Remodelling

The Brief

To redesign a faded classic to bring the challenge and conditions up to modern international standards.

The Course

Located southwest of Manila, on Manila Bay, and originally designed by Gary Player, Puerto Azul was the jewel in the Philipino golfing crown in the 80’s and early 90’s – it was the place to be seen as high society enjoyed weekends and vacations at the resort. However, changing fashions and newer facilities opening closer to Manila led to a gradual but inevitable fading of the resort to the point where, today, it is virtually abandoned.

A local entrepreneur has recently taken control of the resort and has given us the responsibility for bringing the course back and beyond its former glory. Planning is now completed and construction underway. While the routing stays largely the same (but with changes in certain areas of the course to improve the overall challenge and playability), every other aspect of the course will be rebuilt – new greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage, pathways and infrastructure. The work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2018 and discussions are currently active for the course to host The Philippines Open on The European Tour from 2019.
