Michael started out as a stockbroker in the city but turned to professional golf in 1974 following the stock market crash. As an amateur he played at every level and was first selected for the Walker Cup in 1969 as a 19 year old. He was again selected in 1973 and the following year, with the Stock Market in turmoil, he decided that a golfing future offered more rewards. Enjoyed his finest season in 1979, finishing in the top six eight times to earn Ryder Cup honours and a week later won his first title, holding off the challenge of Brian Waites to win the TPC by a stroke at Moor Park. Affected by Ankylosing Spondylitis since 1974 he was forced to retire in 1987 having never lost his Tour card. Highlight of his career was playing in the Ryder Cup in 1979.
Michael now works for the European Tour in sponsorship and golf course design.
