Plage des NationsColin Montgomerie / Europe / Morocco / Signature Design
To design an 18-hole golf course and extensive practice facilities for the Prestigia Group, alongside the enormous Plage des Nations residential and resort development, to the north of the Rabat, in Morocco. Signature design by Colin Montgomerie.
EGD and Colin Montgomerie are continuing our successful relationship with the Prestigia Group, established through our ongoing work with them in Marrakech, with the development of the spectacular Plage des Nations Golf Resort, to the north of Rabat, on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. This is a development on an immense scale, with more than 1,200 acres of an eclectic blend of townhouses, villas, apartments, retail outlets and resort hotels, along with a Colin Montgomerie designed Par 72, 18-hole golf course. The linear, 5 kilometre long development faces onto the dramatic Plage des Nations beach, with the golf course occupying the valleys and hillsides of the open downland terrain, set back from the beachfront.
The sometimes steep, undulating terrain and linear layout set a challenging design task, which has been tackled with enthusiasm to create a design that is bold, visually striking and relentlessly strategic. The elevation changes have been harnessed to provide a design of great scenic variety, ranging from greens set in deep dells to skyline plateaus, tiny pot bunkers to expansive waste areas, cascading streams to shimmering lakes, forest lined fairways to expansive, downland hillsides and even the occasional quirky blind shot if you get out of position! Monty has put together a design that will be a stern challenge to the elite golfer from the distant and sometimes remote ‘Black’ tees, but has carefully located the daily play tees to provide the holiday and resort golfer with a course of manageable length and appropriate difficulty.
